ISO 14001:2015
A new edition of ISO 14001:2015 was released on September 15, 2015. It conforms with the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1, Consolidated ISO Supplement, Annex SL, which contain the ISO guidelines for management systems. The application of the standards of various management systems and system audits will be made easier by a consistent basic structure, basic text, common terminology, and basic definitions for all management system standards.
The new standard, which "is intended to be applied by organizations intending to manage their environmental responsibilities in a systematic manner that supports the 'environmental pillar' of sustainable development," places a strong emphasis on improving the effects of activities on the environment, achieving environmental objectives, and meeting compliance obligations.
According to ISO 14001:2015, “a systematic approach to environmental management can give senior management the knowledge they need to succeed over the long term and create chances to support sustainable growth by:
- preserving the environment by preventing or reducing harmful effects on it,
- reducing the negative effects of the environment on the company,
- helping the organization fulfill its compliance requirements,
- improving the environmental performance of the business,
- using a life cycle perspective to oversee or have an impact on the creation, implementation, distribution, use, and disposal of a company's goods and services in order to potentially stop unintentional environmental consequences from transferring to other life cycle parts;
- achieving financial and operational benefits that may result from the use of alternative, environmentally friendly solutions that strengthen the market position of the organization;
- giving appropriate stakeholders information about the environment."
