The fifth version of ISO 9001, released in 2015, followed the precedent set by Deming's PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Act) cycle. Furthermore, the standard is flexible enough to adjust to the ever-changing dynamics of international marketplaces and enables the application of its standards to the unique needs of the organization.

According to the PDCA's assumptions in the field of action planning, the requirement of the standard is to define:

  • The context of organization and stakeholders
  • Determining the Quality Management System’s scope
  • Identifying system procedures
  • Creating a quality policy
  • Definition and assignment of roles and responsibilities in the organization
  • Action planning according to opportunities and risks as well as quality goals
  • Organizing for modifications
  • Competencies of those operating under the organization's control
  • Channels of communication
  • Rules and methods of supervision of documented information.
